Finish Removal on Wood Furniture

The Correct Use of Paint Removers or Stripper

Directions for HAND Stripping.

* Work with plenty of ventilation, safety goggles or glases, and skin protection.
Stay out of the direct sun and stay protected from wind or strong drafts if working outside.

* Work in small areas starting at the top and working to the bottom of the piece. Apply a generous coat of gel remover. Brush on in one direction. Do not brush back and forth.

* Use soft wood scrapers and/or Steel Wool to remove crinkled finish and spent stripper.Repeat the above process until all layers of old finish are gone. On fine work, when the piece has all the finish gone and looks ready to refinish, go over it again with one last coat of stripper carefully working from top to bottom and removing stripper with #00 steel wool to ensure all traces of finish are lifted from the pores of the wood. Neutralize the wood surface by washing the piece down with Naphtha followed by Lacquer Thinner, if the piece is newer and in very good condition, a washdown with Lacquer Thinner may suffice.

* Let the stripped piece dry thoroughly for at least 24 hours to 48 hours for softer woods or pieces that required long soaking to clean off all the finish. Refinish promptly to seal and protect from humidity changes and environmental contamination.

HINTS & TIPS:

* Test to see if a through cleaning with 'V99' Wood Cleaner & Wax remover might eliminate the need to totally strip and refinish the piece.

* Use the right stripper for the finish being removed. (Determine finish type with solvents.)

* Use solvent washable strippers or paint removers.

* Avoid water washable removers to minimize grain raising, staining problems, and softening of glues or adhesives and the subsequent lifting of veneers and loosening of joinery.

* Avoid Metal Scrapers of any kind, wood fibers softened from the remover are easily compressed by hard metal edges. These sometimes apparently invisible `indents' can later show up after staining or even under clear coat finishes.

* DO NOT Sand a stripped surface. Sanding removes oxidized fibres, the natural distressing wear and ageing collectors refer to as patina. Upon refinishing uneven and splotchy effects result from the `windows' sanded into the surface. Often sanded areas of stripped wood will not take stain or finish the same as the unsanded part of the same piece. Therefore, for instance, sanding of a table leaf usually means sanding the entire top and remaining leaves. The surface was carefully prepared for the previous finish. Successful refinishing will be much easier if we disturb the wood the very least possible, in the finish removal process.
If an area is badly damaged as to require sanding; proceed with care and be aware of the increased finish work that can be created by sanding. Lightly raised grain can in some cases be stained, sealed with sanding sealer, and then sanded instead of sanding on the bare wood.

* Partially strip (on Lacquers): On some pieces a top for instance might be all that really needs to be stripped and totally refinished. Proper cleaning and touch-up of dings, dents, and blemishes on sides or underpinnings with an overfinish of the existing finish might give a very professional result. In the right instance this can be a more profitable for the finisher and offer an affordable option for the customer.

* Use wax paper laid over the remover to slow evaporation and prolong working time. On difficult finishes and in drafty work areas each application of remover can then do more work.

* To lift paint or finish retained in the grain of open pored timber, despite repeated applications of remover, try the following. Let the surface dry for a day, apply a liberal coat of 1 pound cut shellac & and allow to dry throughly then try a coat of remover to lift the shellac and the adhered finish out of the pores. The wax paper trick above helps here also. On hard cases repeat the shellac and remover steps above if positive results come from the first application.

Refinishing

Stripped surfaces are always a little more problematic than finishing on new wood. Generally Pigment Wiping Stains are the best choice for coloring on the stripped surface. Lacquer shading stains and lacquer colorants blended into sanding sealer and build coats are a good bet for color correcting. Use amber lacquer on medium to darker woods or stains to give a richer and homogeneous continuity to the piece. On very light timber and on light colors use water -white lacquer or for the very clearest non-yellowing finish use CAB-Acrylic lacquer.

IMPORTANT:

PROTECT EYES and SKIN.
Always test products in an inconspicuous place to check compatibility and end results.

Companion Materials & Supplies:
* Safety Glasses or face shield for eye protection.
* Heavy duty rubber stripping gloves.
* Apron; preferably rubber or rubber coated.
* WOODEN scrapers
(NOT putty knives or metal scrapers)
* Stripping BRUSH: stripper resistant plastic for getting into carvings and mouldig.
* STEEL WOOL:
#0 or #1 for light clear finishes, #1 or #2 for paints, &
#3 or #4 for very heavy built up layers of finish.
* Rags.

PRECAUTION:
Do not
leave impregnated rags wadded or stacked in bundles as these can burst into spontaneous fire.
Dispose of rags and waste in accordance with local regulations; or lay rags out flat preferably outside,
to dry so as to avoid any fire hazard.

VP demands education heads undergo tests

Vice President Jusuf Kalla (photo: right) received Indonesian Teachers Union (PGRI) chairman Sulistiyo (center) and secretary general Sahiri Hermawan at the vice president's office in Jakarta on Friday.

During the meeting, the association asked the government to quickly issue a regulation to implement a 2005 law aimed at improving the professionalism and quality of Indonesian teachers and lecturers.

Kalla responded to the request by saying all heads of regional education agencies throughout the country must pass teacher certification tests.

"Pak Kalla has promised that in the future, education agency heads must first pass teacher certification tests," Sulistiyo was quoted as saying by Antara news agency.

Sulistiyo said some education agency heads did not have educational backgrounds. As an example, he cited one agency head who was formerly a fireman.

"The PGRI has suggested that to improve the quality of education, an education agency head must be a university graduate and pass a certification test. And the Vice President agreed with it," he said.

The PGRI also urged the government to provide students with free, high-quality textbooks.

"We also requested of the government that the 20 percent of the state budget to be allocated for education not be channeled to the education bureaucracy but (instead) to less privileged students," Sulistiyo said. --JP

RI, China have similarities to enhance trade ties: minister

08/24/08 06:22

Beijing, (ANTARA News) - Indonesia and China have similarities in their efforts to enhance the existing good trade ties for which many companies from the two countries have made trade contacts, a minister said.

"The two nations have similarities in their efforts to step up the long-standing trade relations," visiting Indonesian Trade Minister Mari Elka Pangestu said here on Saturday.

The minister was here to accompany Vice President Jusuf Kalla during a three-day visit August 22-24.

Mari said the main mission of her visit in Beijing was to hold talks with her Chinese counterpart, Chen Deming, on the plan of action to enhance trade and investment ties as well as multilateral issues such as the Doha Round.

The meeting would also focus on the two countries` food security which came under the spotlight a few months ago after they rejected each other`s imported goods, she said.

"The issue of food security will also be high in the agenda of the meeting although the issue has already been included in the ASEAN plus China`s program," she said.

The minister further said more and more Chinese furniture companies had established cooperation with their Indonesian counterparts.

Through the cooperation, Indonesia expected the Chinese furniture makers not only to import logs from Indonesia but also to produce furniture in Indonesia for exports to China and other countries, she said.

"With the cooperation, we hope Indonesian wood products will have special added value and attract foreign companies to invest in Indonesia," she said.(*)

Automatic Swimming Pool Cleaners

There are basically three types of automatic swimming pool cleaners: skimmer systems, booster-pump systems, and in-floor systems. (Aquabot Turbo Pool Cleaner Review) Automatic Pool Cleaners: Skimmer Systems With skimmer systems, the pool cleaner connects to the skimmer and uses the suction from the skimmer to continuously vacuum the pool. You use a standard vacuum hose to connect the skimmer suction opening with the vacuum head which then roams the bottom of the pool. With this type of pool cleaner, you need to make sure the pump strainer pot stays clean. The strainer can become clogged with leaves and other debris which reduces the suction. You can prevent this by periodically cleaning the strainer pot or adding a leaf-collecting canister to the hose (easier). Automatic Pool Cleaners: Booster-Pump Systems Booster-pump swimming pool cleaning systems involve installing a separate pump that catches water that is on its way back to the pool after visiting the filter and heater. The pump turbocharges the water, sending a high-pressure stream through a flexible hose attached to a cleaner that moves around the pool. The two types of booster-pump systems are Vacuum Head and Sweep Head. Vacuum head pool cleaners have catch bags for collecting the debris. Sweep head pool cleaners stir up debris with their long swirling arms to propel it into the main drain where it is sucked into the debris basket or caught in the filter. Automatic Pool Cleaners: In-Floor Systems In-floor swimming pool cleaning systems are built into the pool\'s circulation system. You need to plan ahead if you want to have this kind of pool cleaning system. In-floor cleaners can be used with concrete pools and must be installed at the time the pool is built. These cleaners work by having heads that pop up on the bottom of the pool and spray jets of water to push the dirt toward the main drain. The cleaning takes place in the circulation system. Automatic pool cleaners are affective for in ground pools as well as if you have an above ground pool. Check out the other articles to find out why sometimes a cheap above ground pool may be the way to go.

Tips on Maintaining Your Vacuum Cleaner

No matter what the size of your house, how much traffic it garners or how frequently you do or don't vacuum, buying a vacuum cleaner is still a big investment. There are so many to choose from, depending on your needs. Perhaps you just need a small broomstick-style vacuum for your small studio apartment. Or maybe you need an industrial shop vacuum cleaner for your business needs.

No matter which of these examples you need (or perhaps one in between), the one constant that you can count on with vacuums is that they need proper maintenance in order to continue to be in good repair. How many times have you had something happen to your vacuum and it just stops working mid-job? If this has happened to you, then perhaps the vacuum had not been maintained in awhile.

If your vacuum came with an instruction manual about basic repair, upkeep and troubleshooting, then you should always refer to that manual for instruction if your vacuum should fail or if you just want to give it a good once-over. This is especially true if the vacuum is under warranty, because trying to do anything not authorized or fixing it with an unauthorized dealer can void the warranty - and your vacuum still won't be fixed!

If you need your vacuum parts cleaned, take it to a reputable shop, even if it is not under warranty. If you need your vacuum parts replaced, you should do the same. But make sure you are not getting generic or wrong vacuum parts. For example, if you have Kirby vacuum parts in your Kirby vacuum, it makes sense not to replace it with Hoover vacuum parts. Rainbow vacuum parts should only be put in an authorized machine, and no others. To do so could cause damage to your machine. No matter what price you paid for your vacuum parts, it is not worth it to render it useless with improper maintenance or vacuum parts.

When maintaining your vacuum parts, you should have them properly cleaned as well. Simply spraying them with cleanser and wiping them down with a paper towel like you might do for your counters or kitchen won't do. You should again take them to an proper dealer for your model and have them professionally cleaned. This ensures that your vacuum parts will keep running for years to come and you should have little to no trouble with your machine in between cleanings.

If you have a Hoover, take your machine to a Hoover vacuum parts cleaner. If you have a Kirby, then you should likewise take it to an authorized Kirby vacuum parts reseller and repair shop. A few shops may be authorized by the manufacturer to service more than one type of machine, and this is fine as well. But if you do have a warranty, make sure that you only take it to a proper dealer, or you may not get the free repairs and maintenance that come as a part of your warranty! This could be very costly to you in both the short and the long run, so be careful how you care for your vacuum cleaner.

The Antique Betty Lamp

Lamps in the olden times were not as fancy and classy looking as the ones we find today in many different homes. This is simply because we are lucky to have electricity, and 100 watt bulbs, while the people of the olden days had no such thing. They used lamps made of clay, which burnt oil, small pieces of wood, grease and leftovers of fat, i.e. simply what was on hand. As improvements came about in life, copper and iron became a substitute for clay.

However, even then, the lamps gave off too much of smoke, odor, and leaked oil and grease, so that it fell drop by drop on the objects placed below. This was because of the fact that the wicks in these lamps were of cloth. These lamps absorbed oil more quickly than it would burn, and the extra absorbed would then leak.

The Betty lamp was an invention during the colonial times, which took away many of the problems associated with lightning. It had a wicker holder at its base, allowing the oil which dripped to run back into the bowl, and be consumed again. Further improvements were made when the lamp was covered. This reduced the smoke, and maximized the burning of the oil.

Different forms of the lamp were invented. Some were made of metal; some had oval or round sides. Many had rods attached, which would fetch the wick if it dropped into the oil.

As more and more people became aware of the usefulness of the invention, the American colonials began using the lamp as the primary source of light. Sometimes the Betty lamp was hung from a lamp stand that was on a counter or an elevated iron stand that rested on the floor. Another technique of elevating the Betty lamp was placing it on a turned wood or tin pedestal that sat on the table. The lamp then elucidated the work surface or reading material of the person sitting there.

The word Betty was originated from the word besser which means better. The lamp was selected for the Logo of the American Home Economics Association, because it symbolized light. In the olden days, when the source of lightning was improper, the Betty lamp gave homes the much needed lightning. Therefore, it was chosen as the appropriate symbol for the Association. Even after the Associations name was changed to American Association of Family and Consumer Services, the logo was continued to be used.

The Betty lamp was accepted as the symbol of learning. It symbolizes the following:

The need of exact knowledge
The blessing of fellowship
The value of service
The appreciation of beauty
The spirit of joy
The power of strength
The satisfaction of achievement
The bond of cooperation

Since then, the Betty lamp has become a collectors item, and the original lamps which were used in the homes have been put into museums, and restored. Betty lamps are being made today but now most people burn olive oil, vegetable oil, or kerosene in them. They are popular with living history buffs. Many people who want to give their homes a colonial touch buy the imitation lamps from shops which sell lights and lamps.
